Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question that isn’t answered here, please contact us We’ll be very happy to help.

Shouldn't my freight agent be managing the duty process and ensuring that I don't pay too much?

No, your freight agent is not responsible for ensuring you don’t pay too much duty. Their responsibility is only to ship and clear the goods as efficiently as possible. All duty costs are passed onto you, as the importer of record. The importer of record is responsible for the declarations made on your behalf.

Can I make savings for previously imported goods?

For classification changes it is possible to recover overpaid duty from the previous three years imports. You can also realise savings for future imports.

Do I get official rulings from Customs to support any duty reclaim?

All reclaim work we undertake is backed up with official Customs rulings. We take full liability for all official submissions to Customs.

What information do you need from me to conduct a review?

Typically we only require access to your import records and access to technical product details (usually from your website).

How much of my time will this review take?

We conduct all aspects of the review from our offices. After the initial data gathering exercise from your import records, we don’t usually require any additional time from you.

Is my information secure?

Yes. We protect all data relating to your import activity and costs. This is only shared among your project team and HM Customs.

Will Customs audit my company as a result of the work you have undertaken?

It is possible that Customs will have a renewed interest in your activities, but in our experience they have always welcomed the reviews we undertake for clients, as they trust the integrity of the work we conduct. We will attend any subsequent Customs audit where it is related to the work we have undertaken.

What happens if you discover that we underpaid duty and need to repay Customs?

This happens very rarely - less than 1% of products we review require a repayment to Customs. In these rare events we would schedule the repayment and assist you in making a voluntary declaration to Customs. Each time this has happened the duty overpayment has been far in excess of any underpayment and therefore there is still a significant net gain to be had.

What is my risk?

We have designed our service to be as low risk as possible. We take full liability for all declarations to Customs and, importantly, we will not charge you unless we are able to bring about a duty repayment or duty saving.
