HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has published statistics showing that Gift Aid recoveries by charities in the year to 5 April 2009 totalled £947m. The Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Stephen Timms, drew attention to these figures in a reply to a written parliamentary question.

Although total recoveries have increased significantly since the introduction of Gift Aid, it is still estimated that £750m goes unclaimed each year. At this time of continued downward pressure on donations, charities need to make sure that their Gift Aid processes are as efficient as possible.

To view the recoveries in full, please see the statistics published on the HMRC website: Repayments of tax and payments of tax credits to charities.
