Andy Carey from Bexley completed the Dublin marathon on 26 October in a swift three hours and 19 minutes, raising over £900 for Demelza Hospice Care for Children.
Andy, who works as the Manager of the Business Support & Solutions department at the Sidcup office of Vantis, the UK accounting, tax and business recovery and advisory group, ran the full 26 mile journey around Ireland’s capital to raise money for the local charity that Vantis in Sidcup is committed to supporting. The money that Andy has raised will go towards the running costs of Demelza’s new Eltham Hospice, which opened in March this year.
Andy comments:
“This was my first ever marathon – and I can see why people say they are so tough! The first half was bearable and, dare I say it, almost enjoyable, while I was running through Phoenix Park. But then both my body and brain seemed to start packing up - and it was a real mission trying to keep myself going.
“The thought of the money I would be raising for Demelza, and of the support that my family and friends had given to me before and during my training, made all the difference in the last six to eight miles. I can safely say though that I loved the experience so much that I cannot wait not to repeat it ever again!”
Usually found assisting growing businesses at Vantis in Sidcup (formerly McBrides), where he has been employed since July 2000, Andy trained hard during evenings and weekends for several months, running between 35-40 miles per week in preparation for the event.
