The Charities Act 2006 introduces a new legal form of Incorporation which is designed specifically for charities - Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIO). Advantages include:
- Single registration - file accounts only at the Charity Commission
- Less onerous reporting requirements - more exemptions
- Less onerous constitutional requirements - approval of constitutional changes required by the Charity Commission alone
- Lower costs - the Charity Commission levies no charges for registration or filing and does not impose penalties
- More straight forward arrangements for mergers and constructions
There are provisions for converting into a CIO or setting up as a CIO.
